Privacy Policy
Pulse is a nutrition, training and coaching app operated by RK Media Labs in Calgary, Alberta, Canada (“Pulse”, “we”, “us”). This policy explains what we collect when you use the Pulse app and website, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It’s written to meet Canada’s federal privacy law (PIPEDA), Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), and the rules Apple and Google set for health apps.
What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your name and email address, or the name and email your Apple or Google account shares when you sign in with them, and a password if you create one (stored only as a secure hash by our login provider).
- Profile and goals: sex, year of birth, height, weight, target weight, goal, activity level, training experience, training days and equipment, diet style, foods you avoid, and units.
- What you log: food and drinks (including foods and meals you create), water, body weight and body fat, workouts and sets, and progress photos.
- Coach messages: what you write to Coach and its replies, and the plan changes you apply or dismiss.
- Groups and challenges: the groups you create or join, and your challenge results.
- Problem reports: anything you send through Profile → Report a problem.
- Waitlist: your email address and when and how you agreed to hear from us.
Information from your devices, with your permission
- Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android): if you connect them, Pulse reads steps, active energy, workouts, body weight and body fat. Pulse only reads; it never writes to or deletes from them.
- Bluetooth smart scale: if you pair one, Pulse reads weight and the body measurements the scale reports, over Bluetooth on your phone.
- Camera: used only while you scan a barcode or take a progress photo. Barcode scanning happens on your phone; only the barcode number is used to look up the food.
Information collected automatically
- Basic usage events: that the app was installed, opened (at most once a day), that you finished onboarding, and that you viewed the Plus page, with a random install ID, your platform and app version. We use these to count installs and see whether people come back. No advertising IDs, location or device fingerprinting.
- Error reports: when something breaks, the app sends a technical description of the error. Emails, tokens and IDs are removed on your phone before anything is sent.
- Subscription status: whether you have Pulse Plus, from Apple or Google through our payments provider. We never see your card details.
We don’t collect your precise location, contacts, or anything from other apps, and Pulse contains no advertising or third-party tracking SDKs.
How we use it
- To build and update your calorie, macro and training plan, and show your progress.
- To run Coach: when you message Coach or open the Home screen, we send a short summary of your profile and recent numbers (display name, sex, age, height, goal, diet style, training days, targets, last 7 days of food, water, steps and workouts, recent weights, active challenges) with your message to our AI provider to generate a reply.
- To run groups and challenges, including showing your display name and results to members of groups you join.
- To provide Pulse Plus and restore purchases.
- To fix bugs, keep Pulse secure and prevent abuse.
- To email waitlist members about the launch and tips, only if they agreed.
We use your information only for these purposes. We never sell it, never rent it, and never use health information (including anything from Apple Health or Health Connect) for advertising, marketing or data brokering.
Who we share it with
We share information only with the service providers that run Pulse for us, under contracts that limit them to providing that service:
| Provider | What they do | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, login and file storage | Everything stored in your account |
| Anthropic | The AI model behind Coach | Your Coach messages and the summary of your numbers described above. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models. |
| RevenueCat, Apple, Google | Subscriptions and payments | An anonymous account ID and purchase records |
| Apple, Google | Sign in with Apple or Google, if you choose it | The sign-in request |
| USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts | Food and barcode databases | Search words and barcode numbers only, never who searched |
| Resend | Sending waitlist emails | Your email address and the emails we send |
Members of a group you join can see your display name and your results in that group’s challenges and feed. Nobody else can see your logs.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety, or as part of a sale or merger of Pulse, in which case this policy would continue to apply.
Where it’s stored
Your data is stored by Supabase on servers in the United States (Ohio), and Coach requests are processed by Anthropic in the United States. Information stored or processed outside Canada is subject to the laws of that country, including lawful access by its authorities. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access to your account’s data is limited to you by database security rules.
How long we keep it
- Your account data: until you delete your account. Deletion is immediate in our live systems and leaves our backups within 30 days.
- Error reports and usage events: kept for up to 24 months. When you delete your account they’re unlinked from you, so they can’t identify you.
- Waitlist emails: until you unsubscribe or the waitlist closes, plus proof of your consent as Canada’s anti-spam law requires.
Your choices and rights
- See and correct: most of your information is visible and editable in the app. You can ask us for a copy of everything we hold about you.
- Delete: delete your account any time in Profile → Delete account, or ask us to do it (see how to delete your account).
- Withdraw permission: disconnect Apple Health or Health Connect, turn off camera or Bluetooth access in your phone’s settings, or unsubscribe from emails using the link in any email.
- Ask questions or complain: email us at the address below. If you’re not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca) or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (oipc.ab.ca).
We’ll answer requests within 30 days and may need to confirm it’s really you first.
Health information
Pulse treats your food, weight, body measurements, workouts and anything from Apple Health or Health Connect as sensitive. We use it only to provide Pulse’s features to you, we never sell it or use it for advertising, and we never share it with anyone except the providers listed above who run those features. Data from Apple HealthKit is never used for advertising or disclosed to third parties for any purpose other than providing Pulse to you. Pulse’s use of information received from Health Connect follows the Health Connect Permissions policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Children
Pulse is for people 16 and older and isn’t directed at children. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before the change takes effect. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
